A Chertuga Tragedy [short story]
This is a short story i made for my creative writing class. Bear with me here, i know i could have done alot better but due to time constraints i was forced to spit out a half way decend story.
Note, all formatting was lost in transition. Paragraphs just go to the next line and don't indent.

The buzzer sounded in the nearby hall. Milo snatched up the stereo remote off the counter and turned down the volume. As he did so he checked the time on the stylus lying on the counter. Thursday, June 3rd 2063, displayed the digital clock. Milo thought to himself “Damn, this week has gone fast, I gotta call my parents soon.”.
The buzzer sounded again. This time Milo half jogged, half sprinted to the door of his apartment. Pressing the button on the intercom engaged the two way video conference with the street outside. Immediately the picture of his friend appeared on the display.
“You gonna let me in?” questioned the friend.
“Yeah, Yeah. Give me a second.” Milo pressed his thumb onto the fingerprint scanner and an indicator light changed from red to green. The friend then walked inside and the screen turned black. Milo laid back down on the couch and waited eagerly for his friend to arrive.
Moments later a knock was heard on the door. Milo got up, and walked calmly towards it. He pressed the scanner again and the door unlocked. Standing in the doorway was his best friend from high school, Jeff Bridges. At the site of his friend, Milo embraced Jeff in a strong bear hug. “Long time, no see!”
“No kidding!” Grinned Jeff.
“Yeah man, I've been working a lot lately.” Milo smiled back. Then someone caught his eye down the hall. She noticed he was watching her and she waved. Milo waved back and then motioned at Jeff. “Come on inside, make yourself at home.” The room went quiet as Milo and Jeff walked into the great room. What have you been up to since I left?”
“Well, to make a long story short, I finished high school and got accepted to the local NYU, where I'm studying to become a lawyer. Haven't seen you in a while man, are things working out for you since you left high school? And whose that cute girl down the hall?”
“Oh, shes just a neighbor, and yeah, things are better than ever if you cant tell by my apartment.” Milo paused for a moment to take a look around. Near the front door he noticed his stove timer was almost up. “You want something to eat? I'm making cookies, my grandmas secret recipe.”
“Yea, sounds delicious.”
“Have a seat, make yourself comfortable.” Milo motioned at Jeff to go sit in the living room. Then he headed into the kitchen to get the cookies. He blurted out at Jeff from across the great room, “Man Jeff, you haven't changed a bit.”
“And neither have you, well, besides your wealth. Tell me what you do again?”
Milo took a plate of cookies into the living room and set them on the glass coffee table. The plate immediately made a steam ring on the table from being so hot. Jeff glanced at the table and noticed the ring with a concerned look.
“Hey man don't worry about that, its a self cleaning table. Anyway, so yeah, back onto the subject. I'm a freelance computer programmer. As you can probably remember I dropped out of high school my junior year.”
“Oh yea, of course. All of our friends thought you were making a stupid mistake.”
“Yeah, well.. It turned out for the best. Even though it may have seemed like a stupid mistake, I do not regret it one bit.”
“And why is that?”
“Well, for starters, public education is not for everyone. And trust me, it was not for right for me. I have learned more being in the real world and writing computer code than I ever did in public education. I started writing and manipulating computers back in, oh, 7th grade i think. Remember all those kiddie scripts i made back in the day?”
Jeff chuckled, “Of course, you made some pretty funny stuff man.”
“Yeah well, that is what started my whole interest in computer programming. Anyway, once I hit junior year I just couldn't take it anymore. I had my priorities straight, but everyone else thought i was crazy. I made the plunge into the adult world at only 17. My parents backed me financially until i could pay my own rent, which really helped me out. Then I began studying. I knew I had a talent in computer languages because they came so naturally to me. It seemed like I had practically written the languages myself, which was the biggest contributer to where I am today.
“I started coding small things at first. Programs for friends who needed small business solutions. Random jobs here and there to put some food on the table. But I never was hungry. I always had money then, and I always have money now. In fact i have more than enough, because when I turned 18 I was asked to join an elite group of promising computer programmers who had shared with me some very interesting ideas. I accepted their terms, some of which were rather strict, and began the company known today as Chertura Corp. You've probably heard of them. Want a beer?”
Milo got up from couch and headed towards the kitchen. He heard Jeff say “Sure.” So he pressed the beer button on the refrigerator door panel. A screen came up showing that he only had 2 left, and then asked if he wanted to have more delivered. Without thinking Milo pressed 'yes' and then opened the fridge and grabbed the last 2 cold ones. He then headed back to the couch and handed his friend one of the cans of beer. “Last one, enjoy!”.
“Thank you. And yeah, of course, Chertura Corp is one of the biggest software giants in todays world. Jeez, you must own a hefty chunk of stock.”
“Well yeah, that was one of the terms to signing with these guys. They had no money to there names when they first started. But they promised some very high percentages of stock. I currently own 40% of the company in stocks alone.”
Jeff's jaw dropped at the second the figure went through his head. He thought of how much money Milo had, and kept comparing that to his own wealth. “So thats what, like $825,000,000?! Thats 1,000 times what I make, and i thought I was doing good!”
Milo blushed. He was proud of his wealth, but was embarrassed of his past. “Well, I guess you could say i played my cards right. And, to be exact its over $900 million now.”
“No way...” Jeff shook his head in disgust, still going over the mind boggling figures in his head. “So why aren't you retired, and having a family?”
“Well, thats my biggest problem. You see, I never really was a social person. I mean, I write computer code as if it was the blood in my veins, but I just cannot meet attractive women these days.”
“Well,” chuckled Jeff, “you should really come check out the college scene sometime. It has the most beautiful women you have ever seen. And, on top of that, you have the perfect chick magnet. Money!”
“That seems way to easy enough.”
“Yeah, the women on campus are dieing to mean rich young men. Your perfect. In fact, what are you doing tonight?”
Milo frowned, “Oh, i don't know... I planned on writing an algorithm that has been puzzling me for quite some time. But if you want to go do something, I'm sure I can free my schedule.”
“Excellent! I'll make some video calls and get back to in a couple hours, alright buddy?”
“Sounds great.” Milo showed Jeff the door and then closed it behind him. He then went to the couch and plopped himself down on top. A million things were going through his head right now. Milo knew that this could be the opportunity knocking on his door. He had been wanting to start a family for some time now, and this was finally his chance. Thoughts about why he couldn't be the best husband in the world, and things such as financial security and his personal wealth flashed in his head. Milo new everything he ever needed to learn about computers, but he was in a whole new world when it came to dating. What to say, what to wear, all thoughts puzzled Milo as he lay there on the couch. Soon he found himself drifting off to sleep.
The phone was ringing when Milo woke up from his nap. He quickly got off the couch and snatched up the phone off the counter top. “Hello?” he said sleepily into the phone.
“Hey Milo, its me, Jeff.”
“Oh hey Jeff! So, are the plans on for tonight?”
“Yeah, everything looks good. I got a friend from high school to join us. You remember Ryan right?”
“Oh yea of course, he played soccer i think...”
