I have just the thing. I started C4D last week, and I ran into the same problem. I have v.8.5, so don't hold me to version differences. Go to render settings, and select "Multi-Pass Rendering", click the "Enable Multi-Pass Rendering" checkbox, and go to the "Channels" drop-down/arrow button and add all channels. In the "Path" field, put in the directory where you want to save your render. Make sure .psd(Photoshop Document) is selected as the file type, and make sure "Multi-layer File" is checked.
Now, when you render, every aspect of the scene you could want to change will be made into a layer. Alot of them you don't often need, so you can toy around with the "Channels" settings to only render the channels you want. One of my favorites is the "reflections" layer that it produces. You can get some pretty awesome ghost effects that way.
Good luck. I'll monitor this thread for any questions you have.
