Interesting Point from Game Informer
I recently got my magazine for the month (free subscription came with halo 2 reserv-age) and i always enjoyed reading the fan mail. They're always rediculously stupid or meaningless but fun none the less. However, this month i was delightfully surprised at the letter of the month, where a valid point was made.
In short, he said that video games and this whole industry is the ONLY industry based on potential and anticipation. You go out and buy your system for a lot of hard earned money, sometimes because of a 50 dollar game, sometimes because of the superior graphics, ect. but, like most buyers, you rely on the potential it has. Now a days, the game companies are being more and more secretive about their games and products, and, like this one fan letter's author, i think we deserve to have some sort of idea what we're getting into when we purchase these systems. You dont buy a house based on the idea that there MIGHT be a cool screen door comming out later, (one of the authors points, not mine) or based on the idea that a cool new paint might come out and look good on it. You dont buy a car based on the idea that a sick new suspension or a sick new sound system might come out for it. You dont see other industries like the gaming one, and for this reason, we should at least be given a glimpse of what to expect to come out. We get very little details on a game, and im not asking for a TON of info, im asking the gaming industry to open up to its customers and to keep us informed. Let us know if you have a new premise for a game comming out and let us know if you'll be releasing a sequel to a fun game. Give us the details! i dont want the full plot, but i'd like to know say some features for it, see some screenies for it, and just get more info then they currently give out. I mean, not only do we buy their products but they have a choke hold on us, the consumers. Whenever a new system is released, we see the old ones get labled obsolete, and no new games ever come out on them anymore. When xbox 2 or ps3 come out, i will have to shell out the money to purchase the new system if i want to play the newer games. We are under their grasp. The least they could do is let us know what to expect. The customer is, after all, always right.
Anyway, feel free to discuss and if you want a full copy of the letter that spurred this and my next project (leakage) feel free to ask here. Opinions?
Thanks for reading this rant
