lol yup don't use effects :P text is something that most of the time (in sigs - in actual banners etc. then effects would be used) is very simple. I use a simple but cool font (its fonts you wanna get) and lower the opacity or change the blending mode, colour etc. the text you have in the more recent sigs to me are fine, for example your current two. Personally if you wanna improve more you should widen your canvas and do some bigger things as practice, when I was into sig making I used to make a large background and cut my favourtie part for my sig.
