although this technique is way over used (the exploding effect), i kinda like this one. and your pixel stretch background really adds to it!!

I'd try to work on the exploding light a little more (tweak wrote a tut). It would really bring this piece together.

well you see how the light in this one is kind of rounded. most explosions have bursts of light. kind of like here:
