OK, fortunately for you I went through hell with an almost exact same problem with my DSL.
Fortunately the Verizon DSL reps I talked to had some idea of what they were saying to me.
First, the jack that your DSL modem is plugged into:
- Is there a splitter so another phone can be plugged into the same outlet as your DSL modem?
- Is the telephone cord going into your modem more than 6 feet long?
- Are there some phones not behind DSL Filters in your house?
If the answer to any of those three right there, that's very likely your problem. You're going to have to remove any splitters there, and shorten the phone cord if it's too long. If you can't reach your router by shortening the phone cord, get a longer Ethernet cable. Even the shittier kind you can buy are rated to go up to 125 feet before they need to be amplified again. Some even longer.
The only other possibility is your modem could possibly be defective. I had the misfortune of that being my problem, even after correcting everything I mentioned above. If that's the case, you're going to have a fun time going through their tech department until they acknowledge it's a hardware malfunction.
Because I had called them so frequently about this problem however, they ended up giving me 6 months of free service when they saw how long my service record was, and I threatened to go with Comcast Cable instead.
