maybe it's just my screen...but i believe there's half opaque white layer in front of his image.
if that weren't there...and making it look kind of dull, i think it'd look pretty hot.

WTF? How can you not tell it's a gui playing the guitar?

The white gradient WORKS because it hides the work he did with fuxxing up the background (smudging, lasso tool + brush, copy and pasting shit around, etc.), and makes it look better and more technical. It would suck if the white gradient weren't there. A LOT more n00bish if it wasn't...

no, the gradient is hideous. it makes it look like there's no technical work whatsoever and it removes any chance the photo had of having any contrast.

that's just my opinion though.

I didnt make a white gradient, but a light gray to blue, set it as background, and then messed with the properties? I can't remember, but I think I put it on lighten or something.
