i use google for images. If you're looking for a pic from the game socom, one of the soldiers, then it would be good to type in something like "socom us navy seals". i did and it came back with some fairly good pics, though, depending on waht you want to create with them. As for cropping, i use photoshop, different meathods for different images. I used to mainly just use the eraser to cut it out (not holding the mouse the entire time, else i cant undo little bits). If not the eraser than i'd put on the quick mask and trace around the body then fill what i want. But lately i've been using the layer mask funcion to do it. once i've got what i want i can just merge the entire layer with a blank layer. A lot of people use the Lasso to cut out pics, but i dont like that one :-\ If the image is really dark then i suggest adding a Brightness/contrast layer, If it kinda blends in, try creating a colour balance layer or play around w/ the channels. Enough of my mini series, i gotta go clean.

Yes i use google as well. Sometimes desktop images are the best becuase they are easy to chop up. I would suggest USING ps to extract the image becuase it is one of the programs that have layers which are good for doing this sort of thing. Basically there are multiple ways to do it but i'll see if i can get someone to write a tut for extracting images.
