Opeth: Your New Favorite Band
A couple of months ago, something changed. I was sitting down listening to some mp3's that my friends recommended. A minute later, I was trying to find my socks. I had them just a few seconds earlier, but I was already starting to miss them. But I didn't want to go find them. I think they were knocked off. Why?
One word: Opeth
One of the best damn bands ever. Out of Sweden, they are cleary insane with their work. Trying to classify their music as any one thing is too hard to do. There should be a new subcategory of music, called "Just Plain Awesome" for this band alone.
I have never heard a band do what this band has done. Imagine some of the best damn death vocals you have ever heard. Now in a split second, have that hardest of the core voice go as soft and low as possible. Now imagine that they did this constantly. And imagine that these death vocals had no computer enhacement. On any of the 8+ cd's they have made.
Think it wouldn't work?
Guess again. Fuck Slayer, and their pansy-ass 'scream as loud as possible so no one can understand you' way. The lead singer of this band, Mikael Akerfeldt, has one of the clearest, intense vocals ever. The lyrics are smart, and layed. It's just plain amazing if you take the time to actually listen. Never play Opeth as background music, unless you are REALLY familiar with them already. You won't fully appreciate it. This band has scared me with it's lyrics. It's not emo. It's about life. This band has put into words what should take countless novels to just scratch the surface of. The lead sing may play down his voice as much as he can, but it's amazing. He'll probably of lost all use of his voice by 35, but damn, will it of been worth it.
You will try to hate this band, if you choose to actually listen to them. I don't care if you hate metal. You won't care if you still hate metal after you listen to them. You'll be dragged in, knocked down, and in fucking euphoria. The God's of Rock command it, and so it shall be. There's no other explanation for their awesometasticness. And don't get me started on the actual music.
Ok, do. Like the vocals, the music is amazing. They have to be one of the most experamentive bands out there, for how fast paced, and varied their songs are. You can be listening to the best, most complex chords that can't even be duplicated (trust me, I've tried. Even with tabs, it's impossible), one minute, and the next, hear the melodic of riffs, ever. EVER.
Having over 8 cd's, (I lost count), you'd think they'd be pretty generic songs, that sound the same. Shut your fucking mouth you English prick, because each song is unique. There are no filler songs. Any song is good. And each cd is different than the last.
Let me break it down for you: This band is not wanting to be known by the world. They don't have any shitty "message to send" to the shitheads of the world [ED.- you]. Their very first cd didn't even have their NAME on it. The only thing on the entire cd case was a plain picture of a flower. Nothing else.
Later cd's were made to be entirely melodic, entirely death, or a mixture of every genre possible (excluding country, rap, pop, indie, and everything else that isn't Opeth). And it all works. This is one of the damn finest underground prog/rock/death/metal/screamo/lullaby bands you will ever hear.
And now for the best past: The average song clocks in at an amazing 7 and a half minutes. Their longest song is a 21 minute balled of death. Listening to Opeth is like fighting a monkey. With a knife. In a ring of fire. You'll die and come back to life again after your first orgasmic reaction to this band.
(I'm beginning to think that this band is so perfect that there is no explantion other than that my future self had traveled back in tim, just to set up the 5 members of this band. Remind me to thank myself when I get older.)
Notable songs include:
Beneath the Mire
The Grand Conjuration
Windowpane
Harvest
Bleak
The Leper Affinity
The Drapery Falls
Closure
and Wreath
Contact me on AIM or through PM for mp3's. Of go on Limewire yourself. Only know that I have a boner, and tune loves this band, to know that it is beyond anything you will ever achieve in life. I could go on talking all day, but it won't matter much unless you hear it firsthand.
