In search of the holy grail
With xhtml and tableless design, many people have tried to create a truely holy grail 3 column tableless design without any extra markup (extra <div>'s). A recent AListApart article covers a technique that works quite well and puts your content before your navigation, a SEO technique that works well.

Argg... No matter how long of time I spend I end up having it only work in internet explorer correctly.

You should never design for IE first, you have to hack for IE display correctly.
